Your first appointment
Your first appointment
If you want a consultation, tell the assistant you would like to make an appointment with the dermatologist-proctologist. If you have been referred, you should bring a referral note from your GP, your ID and your health insurance card with you when you visit our clinic for the first time. We are legally obliged to check these documents. We would also appreciate it if you bring a list with you of the medication you are taking.
The intake interview will be conducted by the dermatologist-proctologist and will take about thirty minutes. At this appointment, you and the proctologist may agree to start treatment straight away. You are therefore advised to bring extra underwear with you to the appointment.
- We kindly request that you are present 10 minutes before the start of your appointment.
- If the referral letter is not yet in our possession, please bring it to your appointment.
- We also ask you to bring your ID (ID card, passport or driver’s license). If your ID does not state your BSN, we also need your health insurance card.
- If applicable, we ask you to bring a list of the medication you use. You can request this at your pharmacy.
- We kindly ask to you fill out the questionnaire and bring it to your appointment.
Part of this consultation is an internal examination. To do this as well and as safely as possible, we ask you to laxate with an enema. With this you empty the last part of your colon, the rectum.
- You will find a prescription for 3 enemas and an instruction sheet with this letter. You need two enemas; the third enema is extra. You can get the enemas with the prescription from your pharmacy.
- You use one the night before your appointment, the other two hours before your appointment.
- If desired, you can optionally use your own enemas according to the above schedule.
Unfortunately, if you do not use enemas, the appointment cannot go ahead.
The first appointment takes approximately 45 minutes. We try to work on time, but sometimes your appointment might start later due to unforeseen circumstances. Please take this into account when making your appointments.
Treatment
We aim to treat immediately during the first consultation.
In the event that you come for treatment of hemorrhoids or removal of skin tags/mariske, please keep in mind that you cannot fly, exercise or go to the sauna/spa for 14 days after the treatment.
Changing or canceling an appointment
You can cancel or reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours in advance. If you have not canceled the appointment 24 hours in advance, we can charge a stay-away fee (an amount of 50 euros). Please let us know in time if you cannot come to your appointment. We can then use the time for you for other patients.
Deductible
Medisch Centrum Wetering provides medical specialist care, this is settled with your deductible (“eigen risico”). This is a legal requirement for all hospitals and clinics in the Netherlands.
The deductible is 385.- euros (or higher if you have agreed this with your health insurer).
Frequently Asked Questions about Your First Proctology Consultation
Is a proctological examination painful?
A proctological examination may feel briefly uncomfortable, but it is usually not painful. The doctor works carefully and explains each step of the examination to ensure you feel informed and at ease.
Why is an enema required before the consultation?
An empty rectum is necessary to perform a safe and thorough proctological examination. Without proper enema preparation, the examination cannot take place, as visibility would be insufficient.
How is an internal proctological examination performed?
During your first proctology consultation, the doctor examines the area around and inside the anus. The procedure is performed carefully and with clear explanation. The examination is usually brief and helps assess complaints such as haemorrhoids, anal pain, itching, or rectal bleeding.
Can I return home or go back to work after the appointment?
After a diagnostic consultation, you can generally resume your normal daily activities immediately. If a treatment is performed during the visit, such as haemorrhoid treatment or removal of skin tags, you will receive specific aftercare instructions.
Will I always receive treatment during the first consultation?
Whenever possible, treatment is provided during the first consultation. This is often feasible for conditions such as haemorrhoids or anal skin tags. In some cases, additional diagnostic evaluation may be required before treatment can be performed.
What should I know about cancellations and insurance coverage?
You may cancel or reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours in advance without charge. After that time, a non-attendance fee may apply. Please note that your annual mandatory health insurance deductible may apply to your consultation or treatment.
